Day Two Survival

I am crossing my fingers like WOAH right now because we are two days in to a new school year and things are going really well. After having two ROUGH classes back to back I've forgotten what an average class can do. And I didn't realize how much I would like them and so fast too. Just FYI, I have never been the person that loves their class right from the start. People in the hall ask me how things are going and I may tentatively say, "OK..." I like to play the wait and see card I guess. Usually after the first week I am feeling really good about my kids. I am also not that saccharine sweet teacher. I want to smack that teacher. No offense. I tried that for like 5 mins once and my kids looked at me like I had 6 heads. Never again.

Are my kids perfect? Absolutely not. Are there a few who I believe are waiting to show their true colors? Definitely. But even the problems we are working to fix are normal. We are working on the basics like "raise your hand to speak" and "save comments about your imaginary pet gerbil for after math class." Last year I was working on "punching your neighbor is not acceptable" and "it is not OK to pee in the corner instead of in the toilet." Seriously. I am still hesitant and waiting for bottom to fall out, but all in all I think we are on track for having a successful year.

AND...

It's day two and I'm already IN LOVE with the class. Shh. Don't tell. I will probably keep that to myself when my coworkers ask, but I think I'm sold.

  1. I love this post. I am not saccharine sweet either or bubbly. I have dealt with the really difficult class before as well. Average problems seem so strange at first.

  2. I tried the saccharine sweet thing on day one. I had to basically re-do the first day on Friday -- that's how much it *didn't* work!

  3. LOL! That's great. I'm sad to say I must have one of your classes from the past, however! ;)
