Envelope i pods :)

I was totally inspired when I saw Primary Graffiti's post on Blog Hoppin' on making i pods to store math facts. Check out Swamp Frog First Graders for a video tutorial. Of course I had to go to school and do the i pods ASAP, and they were a huge hit!

Well, this year our school has a few i pod touch mobile carts with class sets of i pods for use as literacy centers and whatnot, so every student in the school got their own pair of earbuds so they won't be swapping earwax with one another. I was having trouble figuring out how to store them when I remembered the envelope i pods! So each student made another i pod today and is using it to store their earbuds. Just in time too because the music teacher is using one of the i pod carts for music this week.

My kids thought they were so cool walking down the hall to music class with their i pods in hand! A few of them rigged it so that they could wear the earbuds and it looked like they were attached to the envelope i pod.  Sorry, no pictures today. But check out Primary Graffiti and Swamp Frog's links. Thanks for the inspiration girls!

Quick Tip

I don't know if anyone else has this issue but here's a quick tip that may help someone out in setting up their room....

Over the summer, our floors are stripped and waxed throughout the entire building. When we come in to set up our rooms the floors are sparkling and beautiful! BUT the admin always says absolutely do not move the furniture! What they really mean is "don't you dare drag those desks and tables across my floors!" As long as there is another teacher within shouting distance, we don't usually have a problem. But there are always times when a certain teammate is preggers and can't lift a darn thing :) no one is available. So here comes the neat trick...

I discovered a few years ago that mouse pads work just as good as those fancy furniture sliding movers thingies. We are lucky enough to have 5 student computers in each room so I snag those and go to work. I just turn the pad upside down so the smooth side is against the floor and the grippy side goes under each table leg. And voila! Huge reading table? No problem. Bulky teacher desk? Piece of cake!

Yay Tarjay!

If you read my earlier post about using the Flip video camera in my classroom then I'm sure you can imagine how excited I was when I saw that they are on sale for $69 this week! Our school has one per grade level plus two extra for checkout.... but with a team of 8 teachers and a school with over 800 kids they are always in short supply. OR you finally get your hands on one and the batteries are dead. No bueno.

SOOOO I got my own! But it wasn't easy. The sale started today so you'd think I wouldn't have a problem... WRONG! I had to go to three different stores to get one! The first store I went to was sold out but told me two stores approx. 30 minutos away each had two in stock. By the time I got to the second store they had already sold both! Thankfully I made it to the last store just in time to snatch up the LAST ONE! Someone at the store mentioned that the company has stopped making them* so if you want one do it FAST!

*not sure on the validity of that claim....random people in Target do tend to be pretty intelligent in my past experience though :)

Flip Camera fun

Here are some videos my kids made to teach others how to use math computation strategies. Each group wrote their own script, practiced, and made their own film using the flip camera. All I had to do was upload the videos! Genius!

Voki

Have you heard of Voki? It is an awesome free site that allows users to create their own avatars. The uses are endless. I made a few video clips featuring my cats, Georgia and Dakota, summarizing important information we had learned that week. The kids typed their stories and had their avatar read them aloud. It really helped the students with editing and story structure. Check it out and tell me how you could use this in your classroom!
